Millie
Research Ranger
Millie is a marine biology graduate with a strong interest in seal research, conservation and public engagement. During her undergraduate degree, she chose to complete an industrial placement year, which led her to a six-month internship at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. There, she trained as a BDMLR Marine Mammal Medic and gained hands-on experience in seal rehabilitation, rescue, release and conservation education—an experience that shaped the direction of her career.
Through this placement, Millie began collaborating with the Seal Research Trust (SRT) on her undergraduate dissertation, investigating post-release sightings of rehabilitated seal pups using long-term sightings data. She went on to volunteer extensively with SRT, the Cornwall Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings Network, and completed a PADI Divemaster internship, developing skills in survey work, photo-identification, data management and public engagement. Her dedication led to her joining SRT as a Research Ranger.
Millie is currently based in New Zealand, working primarily on a sperm whale research project, alongside leopard seal and New Zealand fur seal research, while continuing to work remotely with SRT. She remains passionate about pinniped conservation and is grateful for the support and opportunities provided by her “sealy family”, which continue to shape her path in marine conservation.
